The roles of nurses in the current society is evolving as wider range of health care responsibilities keeps on mushrooming and becoming more complicated. Following the arguments of Raines, new health challenges such as understaffing of hospitals and increased cost of medication as well as growing rates of diabetes, obesities and other health conditions have made the role of nursing to become complex and cumbersome (1). Kovner et al. argue that nurses plays an important role in giving of health education talks and presentations, researching and publishing health challenges, development of medical applications, while they address the health care policies (26).

There had been various indicators of shortage of nurses across the United states of American and this had been revealed by the re revealed by the Bureau of Labor statistics which has created and declared more than half a million vacancies for new registered nurses. According to the report released by the American Association of College nursing, enrollment in the school of nursing had started to decline since the peak of shortage of registered nurses before the year 2009 (2).The Tri-Council members for Nursing had further revealed that the demand for nursing jobs had had drastically dropped between the year 1992 and 1997 while the demand for health services rose (1). The increased posting of job vacancies by the nursing employers and staffing agencies which offered more than 100,000 jobs opportunities indicate the rise in shortage of nursing staff in health cares across the United State.

The shortages of nurses across the United States have been caused by a number of factors which includes insufficient teaching facilities as well as inadequate number of training staffs in the medical colleges. According to the report by the American Association of College nurses, insufficiency of medical training facilities and institutions across the country have caused over population of the already existing institutions (1). The Tri-Council members for Nursing Teacher say that nurses are inadequate and the already existing one is issued lot of responsibilities such that they cannot support the number of students demanding the health care education (1).

Nursing is a more demanding profession and due to insufficient staffing,  there have been increased responsibilities issued to one nurse in a particular health care and barely there is time to rest and this have resulted to stress. According to American Medical Association nursing are having more emotional exhaustion and job dissatisfaction due to the high number of patients they are required to attend to,  at  a particular time with little or no time to rest at a particular day (2).   Furthermore the high rates of turnover of nurses to other jobs have drastically increased due to lower benefits and rewards offered by the nursing profession according to American journal of Nursing (2). Lower allowances and salaries compared to the working hours have been driving nurses away from the profession leading to shortage.

Effects of nurses’ shortage to the community

Kovner et al. argue that the effects of nurses’ job dissatisfaction have caused understaffing of healthcares with the few nurses remaining having increased responsibilities (25). This has caused unnecessary deaths at the emergency rooms since patients are not attended to at the required time. There have been rising cases deaths of patients and re-admission due to high loads of patients in a particular hospital due the rate at which they are being served is demanding.

Role and shortage of nurses to the community Baby Boomers will be most affected by the rising rates of nurses’ retirement and turnover since this generation at retirement requires more healthcare services. Baby Boomers will have more health requirements and attendances due to the old age especially in the aged home care and more deaths are likely to occur from this generation. American Association of Colleges of Nursing argues that families will be affected most and newly born children are likely to suffer more from medical mistakes as parents will opt to treat them instead of taking them to hospitals (1).

Benefits of increased registration of nurses on the health sector

According to Kovner et al., when the number of nurses’ increases in the health sector, the quality of the services provided in hospitals will improve drastically since the number of patients assigned to one nurse will drop down (24). Nurses are likely to be relieved off the job for sometimes and this will result to jobs satisfaction and improved working conditions.  Emergencies will be catered for on the required time hence possibilities of losing the lives of patients will lower.

Solutions to nurses’ shortages

According to America Association of Colleges of Nursing, the nursing schools available should seek strategic partnerships and private support in order to accommodate the number of students enrolled (1). Such partnership have been started by some school such as the University of Minnesota And the Minnesota V.A Health Care Systems in year 2013 according to America Association of Colleges of Nursing on report of Media Relations report (1). Kovner et al. say that support should be given to health care employers to create and sustain the staff development programs and learning for continued competences (23).

According to Bower and McCullough the working environment should be adjusted and made more flexible to make the nurses fit in the structure and program of working (1). Rewards should be given to experienced nurses and should be used to mentors to register new nurses while the appropriate salary and allowances being given. A partnership environment should be created and to advance the practices of nursing by ensuring adequate nursing staff and provision with sufficient autonomy over nursing practices.

Application of technology in the nursing work force should be enhanced in order to reduce nursing workforce as more research should be encouraged to invent new machines of reducing manual work. Following the arguments of Kovner et al., data collection consistency should be encouraged at the local and national level in order to account for variations at particular levels in order to enable the implementation of appropriate work force plans and policies for the registered nurses (22).Role and shortage of nurses to the community American Association of Colleges of Nursing argues that models that consider the need and demand for nursing services should be encouraged in order to support workforce planning by the division of nursing and in public and private organizations (1).

In conclusion, according to Bower and McCullough, nurse shortages in the health sector have caused a lot of challenges to the communities and the solutions offered should be aimed at minimizing the health challenges faced by local communities (1). According to American Association of Colleges of Nursing mentorship programs and campaigns should be encouraged in order to inspire news students to joining the nursing carrier(1).
