Native Americans: Barriers to Seeking Addiction Counseling

  • Introduction
    • Background

The population selected for this research is the Native Americans addicts. This population was selected because although it has a higher addiction rates, it has low access to addiction counseling services.   Research evidence shows that although Native Americans have a higher than average addiction rates, they have lower rates of successful addiction counseling (Venner, Greenfield, Vicuña, Muñoz, Bhatt, & O’Keefe, 2012). Most of them do not seek addiction counseling, and those who seek rarely complete their addiction therapy.  In addition, there is limited research on the barriers that prevent them from seeking addiction counseling because most of the current researches have researched these barriers from counselors’ perspective (Legha, Releigh-Cohn, Fickenscheer, & Novins, 2014; Pullen & Oser, 2014).   Native American addicts have not been given a platform to expound on the reasons that prevent them from seeking addiction counseling or the reasons why they do not complete addiction counseling program.

  • Research Question

The main research question that I will explore in my study is, “Which barriers do Native American addicts face in addiction counseling?” This question is relevant to the identified population because Native Americans have a high rate of addiction but lower rates of addiction counseling. The question is appropriate because it seeks to explore the specific barriers…………………………..

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Integrated Project Model

The integrated project is the culminating activity of your master’s in addictions program. This project will allow you to demonstrate your ability to integrate and synthesize the academic and clinical competencies you have developed and learned throughout your master’s program in addictions.
For your integrated project, you will choose a clinical population that has multicultural characteristics that are different from your own. You will examine the population’s clinical needs, and create a research proposal for meeting those needs. The population and research question should come from your own clinical and theoretical interests, which you may have developed during previous or current clinical experiences.
Based on the literature review you conduct, you will evaluate the population’s clinical needs and hypothesize the potential findings of the research project. You may propose a qualitative, quantitative, or mixed research design, or a therapeutic clinical program.
This project includes two assignments: peer-reviewed references (due in Unit 4) and the integrated project model, your final research proposal (due in Unit 8). The integrative project helps you examine, propose, and evaluate clinical needs, and hypothesize potential findings. Hence, you can propose a qualitative, quantitative, or mixed design, or a therapeutic clinical program.
The discussion questions in each unit will help you to work on your project each week.
Project Objectives
To successfully complete this project, you will be expected to:
1.Articulate knowledge, skills, and practices related to addictions counseling.
2.Apply addiction counseling intervention and prevention theories, models, and approaches to individuals and groups.
3.Identify and understand ethically, culturally, and ethnically sensitive counseling or therapy services for clients in practical settings.
4.Select appropriate assessment interventions to evaluate, diagnose, and develop a treatment plan for clients.
5.Analyze research and models of program evaluation for addiction counseling treatment and prevention.
6.Communicate professionally through writing and effective collaborative interactions.
7.Apply the American Counseling Association and the Association for Addiction Professionals Codes of Ethics to professional behavior and practice. Challenges and Opportunities for Collaborative Research
Project Requirements

You may use five additional references from older journals and textbooks. You may also include the American Counseling Association (ACA) Web site to fulfill the remaining resource requirement.

Project Components
[u04a1] Unit 4 Assignment 1 is done already.
Peer-Reviewed References
For this assignment, you will conduct a literature review.
The Library is a good place to begin your research. As you conduct a literature review, keep in mind the major project requirements, and your selected population, sampling procedures, methodology, and possible interpretations. Challenges and Opportunities for Collaborative Research
APA Style Central provides guidance for citing sources and formatting your paper in proper APA style. See the APA Style and Format section of the Writing Center for instructions on accessing and using APA Style Central.
For this project component, you are expected to locate 15 references, with 10 coming from peer-reviewed journals, to support your final project.
The articles you choose should cover best practices in addiction counseling, intervention and prevention theories and models that relate to addiction counseling with your chosen population, culturally and ethnically sensitive counseling or therapy services, and appropriate assessments to evaluate, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for your chosen population.
Challenges and Opportunities for Collaborative Research
Write two to three sentences about each peer-reviewed journal article. Your descriptions should synthesize results into a summary of what’s known and not known, identify areas of controversy in the literature, and formulate questions that need further research.
Remember, peer-reviewed journal articles must be published in scholarly journals, such as the Addiction Journal or American Journal on Addictions. Additionally, these journal articles must be relevant to your project and published during the last five years. If you use an article that has been published more than five years ago, you may use it but it does not count toward the requirement of the 20 peer-reviewed journal articles.
