Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was a renowned American novelist, lyricist and literary critic whose contributions in the American literature remain unbeaten. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts in the year 1809 to Elizabeth Poe and David Poe and died in the year 1849. Poe lived a miserable an early miserable life since his father abandoned his family when he was at an age of one year, leaving his mother huge burden of supporting his and his sisters and brothers. Soon afterwards, his mother died of pulmonary tuberculosis, a situation which triggered Poe to be adopted by a Merchant in Richmond (Quinn 3). It is this hard life at very tender age that made Poe to engage in a variety of careers like in the military, and later into writing (Wilbur 80). Poe was one of the first known Americans to earn a living through writing alone, a practice which resulted into financial instabilities in his early career life. This paper will critically evaluate the works of Poe throughout his career life by identifying his areas of success and failure.
