Zhang, Donia. 2015. Courtyard houses of Beijing: Lessons from the renewal. Architecture Assignment Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review 27(1), 69-84

Architecture Assignment

This journal article was selected because it has information on the design of courtyard houses in Beijing. Architecture Assignment This article offers important information on how courtyard houses improved neighbourhood in Beijing.Architecture Assignment The author in the article indicates that the design of houses in Beijing has changed considerably and in the process there is no room for neighbour interaction, socialization, and communication. Therefore, this article will be used in the report to support the argument that the future of apartments in cities such as Beijing discourages the spirit of neighbour interaction and socialization. This article offers important information for the literature review.

Zhang, Donia. 2006. New courtyard houses of Beijing: Direction of future housing development. Urban Design International 11(3), 133–50

Architecture Assignment

This article was selected in this study because it offers important information on the modern courtyard houses in Beijing and gives a direction on the future of housing development. This article talks about the new design of apartments in Beijing and how they hinder neighbour interaction and communication. I have learned from the article that the direction taken by the developers of apartments in Beijing will kill the spirit of interaction among the neighbours.Architecture Assignment Additionally, this article offers suggestions on the best designs which the modern courtyard houses should take. This article will be used in the study to support arguments on the design of modern courtyard and interaction.

Pinder, David. 2005. Modernist urbanism and its monsters. In Mical, Thomas, Surrealism and architecture. London: Routledge

Architecture Assignment

This book was selected to discuss the modern urbanism and its challenges with regards to interaction of neighbours. The author argues that the modern urbanization designs and architecture have their challenges in social aspects of the occupants. This book relates the designs and architecture used in urban apartments and their impacts on social life.Architecture Assignment I have learned from this book that the social life is impacted by the architectural designs of urban apartments. Therefore, these designs can encourage or discourage socialization and interaction in urban areas. Therefore, this study will be used to answer the research question on how do we live together better in the future.

Hertzberger, Herman. 2008. Space and learning. Moscow: Uitgeverij

This book was selected to discuss the relationship between architectural design and learning environment at schools. The author indicated that the learning of students at schools is influenced by the space of their learning facilities. This book argues that space is important in ensuring that people can work or learn individually or in groups. I have learned from this book that some architectural designs such as full-height or half- height walls, elevated areas, storeys among others are critical in creating a sense of protection, separation, or boundaries from others. Therefore, this book will be used to discuss the importance of space in socialization and learning in urban apartments.

Rapoport, Amos. 2007. The nature of the courtyard house: A conceptual analysis.  Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review 18(2), 57–72

This article was selected to offer clear conceptual clarification on empirical and theoretical terms of environment- behaviour studies with a focus on courtyard houses.Architecture Assignment The author characterizes courtyard house as a dwelling form by giving examples from various periods and locales. I have learned from this article that several dwellings which are not similar or do not resemble the designs of courtyards can be classified as such based on the criteria developed. This article will be used to offer definitions of courtyards and their characteristics in order to develop a clear understanding on the concept as well as how it influence the social life.

  1. Development of a Theoretical/Practical Framework

This study proposes that the relationships between neighbours have changed significantly with the new types of buildings in urban areas. Therefore, this study asserts that unless the current architectural designs are changed, people would face challenges in living the future. The theory of planned behaviour will be used in this study.

Architecture Assignment

This theory assumes that behaviour is driven by the beliefs held by people about the likely consequences of their actions, subjective norms, perceived social pressure and the perceived behavioural control over the actions taken. Architecture AssignmentThe theory of planned behaviour connects with the research topic in that the behaviours of neighbours are shaped by their environment. According to this theory which was developed by Icek Ajzen, the behaviours of individuals are shaped by their subjective norms as well as perceived behavioural control (Rapoport 2007).

Architecture Assignment

This theory therefore helps on how the behaviour of people living in the modern apartments can be changed because behaviours can be planned. In this case therefore, socialization and interaction behaviour of people in urban areas can be changed by using courtyard housing designs whereby there is an open space where people can socialize and interact within their compounds (Pinder 2005). In addition, Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation design principle will be used in the study.

  1. Case Study

Two case studies will be used in this study which are; Beijing courtyard and Bordeaux Home. These cases were analysed using Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation and Quadrangle courtyard design principles. Based on these case studies, different architectural designs are used in the Europe and China. The case of Bordeaux Home in France indicated that the architectural design used provided harmonious living for family members. On the other hand, the case of Beijing courtyard in China indicated that the all the people living in an apartment have an opportunity to socialize at a central position located at the centre of the apartment.

Architecture Assignment

Bordeaux Home represents the modern architectural design while Beijing courtyard represents the traditional architectural design therefore showing difference on the impact on the social life. The two cases will be used in this study to indicate how the modern and traditional architectural designs influence the social life. Beijing courtyard will be used to explain the Quadrangle courtyard design principle while Bordeaux Home will be used to explain the Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation design principle.

  1. Data Collection Based On the Development Framework

Secondary research methods will be used in the study to gather and analyse secondary research data. The secondary data will be collected by comparing the two case studies to answer the research question and achieve the research objectives. The research data will be based on qualitative research method using descriptive research design and case study strategy.

Architecture Assignment

Case study strategy will be used because it offers a wide range of information by providing in- depth information regarding a phenomenon. Case study strategy will help in studying the research question in a real life situation. Various aspects will be considered such as design and architecture to ensure that the data collected is authentic and relevant for the research. Data collection section will indicate how people live in Beijing courtyard and Bordeaux Home and how the designs affect their social lives.

  1. Analysis of Data Gathered

The data gathered will be analysed using secondary data analysis methods. In this case, the designs of Beijing courtyard and Bordeaux Home will be analysed to understand how they influence the social life of people and hence analyse the threat they pose towards socialization and interaction of people in future.Architecture Assignment In this study I have two types of designs representing traditional and modern architectural designs used in urban areas in France and China.

Architecture Assignment

The case studies were searched from books and online articles in order to get adequate and relevant information. The criterion used to determine the case studies was to have one case study for traditional design and another one for modern design. The analysis of the case studies will be indicated in the data analysis section of the study. This means that data gathered from the case studies will be used to make conclusions, answer the research questions and achieve the research objectives.
